Spread over 1,235 acres of land, Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a well-known tourist attraction in Udaipur to spot various kinds of flora and fauna. The sanctuary was built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh, regarded as one of the bravest rulers of Mewar. It is a significant part of the Sajjangarh Palace which earlier served as a hunting ground for the royal family. However, after the government declared hunting illegal, it was transformed into what we know today as the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
You can spot various birds in the sanctuary such as jungle babbler, black drongo, red-vented bulbul, Indian grey hornbill and white-browed fantail. Additionally, you can spot wild animals like cheetahs, Indian leopards, sambhars, panthers, langurs, jackals, panthers, hyenas, spotted deer and chitals.
There is a gorgeous artificial lake inside the sanctuary, built by Maharana Raj Singh to commemorate his mother, Jana Devi. The lake is officially named Jiyan Lake, however, it is also referred to as Tiger Lake or Bari Lake. It is one of the most ideal spots to enjoy birdwatching and a relaxing picnic in the wild with your loved ones.
