About The Green Dome

The Green Dome is one of the most visited Medina tourist attractions built above the tombs of the Prophet, Umar, and Abu Bakr, which was once Aisha’s chamber. This dome is located in the Prophet’s Mosque’s southeast corner. Millions visit the dome every year since it is a tradition to visit the mosque post a Meccan pilgrimage.

This structure dates back to 1279 CE when there used to be an unpainted cupola made of wood, over the tomb. But, later it was painted and rebuilt using different colors twice; once in 1817 and one in the late 15th century. Since the dome was first hand-painted green in the year 1827, it came to be known as the Green Dome.
