Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Bali

The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (also known as Pura Ulun Danu Beratan) is a beautiful landmark and an important holy place in central Bali, Bedugul, on the western side of Lake Bratan. Flanked by emerald mountain on all sides, the floating temple complex forms a truly bewitching site, making it a significant place to cover with our Bali tour package. According to mythology, the shrines were constructed by local craftsmen who crafted daggers for monarchs and their armies, although no concrete proof of this fact remains. The temple complex consists of not just one but nine separate shrines, eight dedicated to Hindu deities and one Buddhist stupa. 

The Hindu temples each have a presiding deity of its own- Lord Shiva at the Penataran Agung Temple, Dewi Durga at the Prajapati shrine, Rudra, Durga and Mani Murda at the Dalem Purwa, and Lord Vishu at the Pura Meru Tumpang. Each shrine is designed like a Buddhist temple, separated into tiers. The Pura Meru Tumang is the greatest of them all, rising to 11 tiers in height.

The Pura Taman Beji is a small temple where devotees beg for ‘Tirta’ or the holy water. Although the inner sanctums of the four main shrines cannot be entered, the ceremonies taking place inside are visible in plain sight from the temple gates. The eight temples are then followed by a towering Buddhist temple, reflecting the secularity rooted into Indonesian history. 

Some of the temples at the Bedugul Temple Bali are located on small islands, and can only be reached by boat. Traditional boats and motorboats ferry passengers to and from the temples. To extend their stay here, one can even go for a boat tour of the entire lake beyond the temple complex.

There is no public transport connecting Bedugul Temple Bali to the rest of Bali, so the only way to reach the temple would be to hire a car or rent a bike. The temple is located approximately an hour away from Ubud, and around two hours from Seminyak, Kuta or Legian.

The temple is located just on the outskirts of Bedugul, and can be accessed via the main roads of Bedugul highlands from any of the aforementioned cities.

The best time to visit the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple complex is during the drier months of summer, ideally between April and September. Being located in an open setting, the temple is best explored in dry weather. Heavy showers could also hamper water transport and sports.

Things to keep in mind while visiting the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple:

• Keep plenty of cash in hand: The entry fee to the temple complex can only be paid by cash. Furthermore, charges for the boat rentals, and expenses of the temple market also need to be carried out in cash.

• Avoid visiting in the afternoon hours: The temple complex being located on a lake, tends to get foggy during the afternoon hours. In order to get a full, unobstructed view of the scenic complex, it is best to visit the temple before 02.00 PM in the afternoon.

• Keep a camera ready: The Ulun Danu Beratan temple is one of the most beautiful attractions in Bali, so make sure you have a camera ready, or your phone battery fully charged, to carry behind the photographs as mementos.
