Volcano Hekla, Iceland

The first place to start your visit to Volcano Hekla is the Hekla Information Center. This place will provide you with information about the volcano and its surroundings and will also give you advice to provide you with a safe and enjoyable experience. The centre also houses an exhibition on the mountain and emphasises the influence of the volcano on the areas close by such as Holt, Landsveit and Rangárvellir.

Opt for a hike to reach the summit of Mount Hekla by choosing one of the trails which best suits your skill level. Feel excited as you journey through lava fields, rugged volcanic landscapes, and at times snow-covered slopes for 3 to 4 hours. Travel for 6.5 km to reach the summit and feel captivated by the view from the top. If you hike on a clear day, you may be able to view the Fjallabak mountains up to Vatnajökull glacier, Europe’s largest glacier.

Enjoy a stunning view from the top of the summit of Mount Hekla, the volcanic mountain. Feel fascinated as you look at geological formations such as lava fields, ash deposits and volcanic bombs which are large volcanic rocks. Reach the higher points on Mount Hekla to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Icelandic countryside.

Take a journey through the Lava Tunnel, a natural cave that was formed by the eruption of Volcano Hekla in 1783. Walk through the 500-metre-long tunnel which gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high and witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption. Watch the beautiful columns of light that have been created due to the caving-in of the lava tube ceiling near the entrance.

If you are travelling around spring, an enjoyable activity that you can indulge in is a skiing experience around the rim of the crater. You can choose from a number of trails and embark on skiing while enjoying the spectacular view of the volcano and its surrounding areas.
