About Volcano Hekla

It has erupted over 20 times in the past 1000 years since 874 and last erupted for 11 days in the year 2000. The volcano is a part of the mountain ridge which is around 40 km long and 1491 m above sea level. It resembles an overturned boat and has a 5.5 km long fissure called Heklugjá.


Hike up to the crater of the volcano to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the surroundings and a view of the crater from the top. Opt for a skiing experience around the rim of the crater while visiting the volcano in spring.
