7. Mattancherry Palace: Because of its historical significance, this Portuguese palace, also referred to as the Dutch Palace, is among Kochi’s most popular tourist attractions. The Pazhayannur Bhagavati, the deity of the Cochin royal dynasty is enthroned in the courtyard of this quadrangular palace built in traditional Kerala Nalukettu architecture. The villa’s pavement is a wonderful sight, as it resembles sleek black marble but was created using burnt coconut husk, limestone, coal, egg white and other traditional Kerala materials to provide a long lasting gloss. The different paintings drawn in bright and vivid colors in the impressionistic technique are responsible for the Palace’s fame.
