Naggar is one of those few enchanting places in Himachal Pradesh that’s famous for its kaleidoscopic beauty that has managed to remain untouched and elusive. Anywhere that you look while walking on the winding trails full of pinecones and deodar trees, you are met by undulated views of snow-coated mountains and the crashing sounds of the Beas River. Some British officers, in their 18th-century writings, have even compared Naggar to Switzerland, that’s how beautiful it is!

Naggar, thanks to its rich royal history and culture, is an amazing amalgamation of architectural styles- be it the ancient Naggar castle, Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries, or even the picturesque timber houses. The entire place is seeped in that chic artsy vibe that attracts art lovers from all over. It has many art galleries and museums that are important repositories of the local customs and collectibles and are a must-visit.

Known as the gateway to some of the best and the most intriguing treks in Himachal Pradesh, Naggar is also a haven for trekkers and hikers. This is where you can explore trails like Beas Kund, Chandrakhani Pass, Bhrigu Lake, Hampta Pass, and many more.

The humble and warm locals never fail to invite visitors to their home for a cup of tea or local Pahari fare. The place is also famous for other varieties of cuisines ranging from Mediterranean, Italian, to Tibetan.

  1. Which are the places to see in Naggar?

Naggar has some of the most beautiful ancient and new architecture that symbolises the magnificent beauty of Himachal Pradesh. Here’s a list of the places not to miss while visiting Naggar:

    1. Naggar Castle: This 14th-century medieval-era mansion is the landmark attraction at Naggar. This erstwhile property of Raja Sidh Singh has been converted into a heritage hotel that’s also open for tourists. The castle, famous for its unique Western-Pahari architecture, has exquisite and delicate carvings on the doors, walls, ceilings, and archways. The most interesting aspect of the castle is that it is built entirely of stone and wood without any metal. There is a museum inside the complex for one to see traditional art and crafts of Himachal including masks, idols of deities, carpets, etc.

    2. Dagpo Shedrup Ling Monastery: Located on the banks of Beas, this stunning monastery is a must-visit while in Naggar. Not only can one experience the elusive serenity and quietude typical of a mountainside place, but also soak in the beautiful scenery around. Inaugurated by HH Dalai Lama in 2005, this monastery houses monks, who are more than happy to interact with the visitors. The only sounds that you will hear are the beautiful & mystical reverberations of Buddhist hymns and the fluttering of hundreds of prayer flags.

    3. Urusvati Himalayan Folk Art Museum: Founded by the famous 19th-century Russian scholar and artist Professor Nicolas Roerich and his wife, this museum is the best place to see the vibrant & colourful culture of Himachal Pradesh. It houses an amazing collection of traditional musical instruments, costumes, masks, life-size statues, fossils, and homeware. One can see paintings made by Roerich himself that depict the beauty of the Himalayas. Don’t miss to see the ancient carved stones just outside the museum, which are memorial stones of the kings & queens that ruled over Kullu.

    4. Gauri Shankar Temple: This 11th-century temple is not only the oldest in the region but also the most important. Locals believe that the temple and the Shivalinga made an appearance during an excavation. The most important aspect of its architecture is that it is a roofless temple. The temple, made entirely of stone, has the statue of Nandi and smaller temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

    5. Jagatipatt Temple: Located in the Naggar Castle complex, this 11th-century temple has a stunningly rich wooden architecture that’s intricately carved with flower patterns and motifs. Legend says that the stone slab in the temple was carried here by a swarm of honeybees, who were the reincarnations of all the mountain deities, from the summit of Deo Tibba. The locals revere the temple for the fact that it has withstood natural calamities and hence is a source of unshakeable faith for them.

    6. Chamunda Bhagwati Temple: Located near the Nishala Village, this ancient temple is dedicated to Chamunda Bhagwati. The goddess is said to be one of the seven matrikas of the mother goddess and attendant of goddess Durga. The temple’s surroundings are beautiful, consisting of lush greenery and hills in the background. Because of its picturesque location, the temple has been a popular film shooting location as well.

    7. Jana Waterfalls: Though it’s a little far away from Naggar (around 12 kilometres), Jana Falls are a must-visit while in the region. Reached after a short scenic trek through pine & deodar thickets and apple orchards, the waterfalls suddenly reveals itself, leaving everybody stunned with its beauty. Passing through the narrow and unknown terrains were the most exciting. Greeneries all the way and the snowy peaks made the trek more intriguing for me. The best thing about these treks is that no matter you are you would enjoy the trek.

Excellent
The work from home seemed quite relaxing until I started to feel trapped. Thus, come 2021, and kept on looking for a workstation trip where I could stay amidst nature and still work. On came Thrillophilia as a genie and arranged the most fabulous stay in Manali. The three-bedroom cottage I was staying in could accommodate nine people and I set off with 4 of my friends. We loved the serene Kullu Valley setting but met our office targets with full gusto. The stay was not just beautiful being situated amidst apple orchards but was a sanitized space with staff performing hygiene checks daily. My friends made the most of the indoor workspaces while I brought about the outdoor furniture to do office work while not missing out on nature’s grandeur. Totally loved how Thrillophilia at such short notice, arranged for a homestay that had Wi-Fi connectivity, power backup and a laptop-friendly workspace. I still miss our evenings where we would gorge on local snacks cooked in the kitchen, by a chef using fresh seasonal produce. If WFM has been a mood dampener for you, give Thrillophilia a try, to arrange a nourishing stay in the hills!

The cozy rooms are perfect to stay for a small family of 3 people. Me, my partner and our kid has loved this place provided by Thrillophilia at such a discounted price online. On our arrival, we were welcomed by a drink which was tasty, by the smiling faces of staff members. They all were very generous and helpful. My kid has loved being with them. I must say they all are well trained. Our visit to the local village and learning about organic farming was memorable.

Ekaling Khanna Chanderkhani Pass Trek
Very Good
What a scenic and an understated beauty is this trek! It was a brilliant trek to say the least. I took this trek along with a couple of my friends. We have not been trekking for some time now. Our busy work schedules and other issues made trekking and travel take a backseat. Once when we booked this trek, we started spending more time to work out and gather energy. It was really a great trek and it was so enjoyable. It was not very tedious but certainly dehydrating and tiring. The key here is to chose the right season as most areas in the trek trail are dry.

Vidur Banerjee Chanderkhani Pass Trek
Superb
The trek was really nice for the rate we paid. Most treks are costly if they are to be good. This trek was good but not costly. The trek started with a forest walk throughout. After going through the forest, we went up the snow capped peaks. These led us to the further ranges of the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas. It is one of the popular ranges. On the other side, slowly we saw the Beas valley. We camped at some of the beautiful locations before reaching the peak and completing the trek. In short, it was a memorable, adventurous, and a fun-filled experience, to say the least.
