Old Goa

Old Goa, also fondly referred to as Velha Goa comprises of a deeply historic portion of Goa. The city located in the Northern region of the state was originally constructed by the Bijapur Sultanate that can be dated back to the 15th century. In fact, this place was so popular that it served as the capital of the Portuguese India from the time they ruled in the 16th century till the end of the 18th century. Unfortunately, plague struck back then and much of it was remained to be in ruins. However, whatever does exist holds great value and is also considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The formation of the name, Old Goa can be traced back to the 1960’s. One could find simplistic rural life in this place. Much can be accredited to the Portuguese as it is only after their arrival and consequent departure that this city gained tremendous popularity.

The beauty and richness of this ancient city reflects so much power that a Dutch visitor once compared it with Amsterdam. Old Goa of today is located approximately 9 kilometers east of Panaji. This city is filled with churches, convents, monuments, forts and a kind of very relaxing scenario.

There are a range of activities that Old Goa offers to its visitors. The night-life is quite soothing and relaxing as well. Old Goa – on the contrary to the wide belief of Goa being the party hub of India – is the perfect getaway for those looking for a solace and calming time out of their busy, bustling city – life schedule.

Owned by the Goa government, the Reis Magos Fort is among the popular ancient monuments in Goa. The 400 year old fort, constructed in the year 1551 happens to be one of the oldest forts in Goa. It is believed that the name of the fort was laid after three men from the Bible. Today, the fort falls under the ownership of the Goa government and finds itself on the list of Goa ancient monuments. It has been fully restored and serves as a heritage centre in the town.

What started as a defence fortress, this fort has served multiple uses as a jail and then a hospital. Back in 1993, the fort was completely abandoned and left to perish in a neglected state. After being renovated, the fort was opened to the general public in the year 2012.
At present, the fort serves under a guided vision and mission to promote cultural heritage in Goa. This is why, it has also become a centre for displaying numerous exhibitions, fairs, festivals and educational events.

The fort is built in a typical fusion style of architecture, combining Hindu and Portuguese styles. It is known that the altitude of the fort gives a splendid view of the surrounding sea and landscape of Goa.
It is also home to several artefacts, including 7 guns from the Portuguese era. The place is well connected with major railways stations, including Karmali, Verna, and Vasco da Gama. One can also get here by plane through the Dabolim airport.

Rich in history and heritage, Korlai Fort is one of the most majestic destinations in Goa. The fort overlooks the vast blue expanse of the Arabian Sea, and offers a stunning view of the gorgeous scenery all around. A haven for nature lovers and history buffs, this fort is an unmissable tourist spot in the state of Goa. The Korlai fort once used to be an elaborate military fortification, and it was occupied by the Portuguese during the 16th century.

It was originally built as an extension of the island in 1521, and it was used as a shield against the Revdanda creek inlet. In those times, this small piece of land was known as Morro De Chaul. The name comes from Morro, which refers to a small hill, and Chaul which was then used to refer to a village nearby whose residents spoke Portuguese-Creolo (also known as the Kristi dialect).

The fort is now in ruins mostly, but once it was considered a majestic property. Nonetheless, the history and heritage of the Korlai Fort still stands untarnished. In its golden era, the fort was rumoured to have the capacity to house nearly 7000 horses and just as many men. The fort enjoyed a strategic location during invasion primarily due to its geography.

There are many reasons why the enemy forces found it difficult to penetrate this fort - for one, it is located on the slopes of a hill which would require the enemy soldiers to climb a steep slope. Second, the fort houses a tall lighthouse which allowed the residents to see any enemies approaching. Lastly, it has 11, huge gates which were all heavily guarded.
Spread over a length of 2828 feet and the breadth of 89 feet, the fort almost looks like a community of its own now, and offers some of the most magnificent glimpses of the creek. Whether you are a history nerd or simply appreciate nature in all its wild forms, Korlai Fort is definitely worth checking out.

Also, these birds are the reason behind the declaration of Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary as an International Bird area. The results even show that 53 out of 255 species breed in the sanctuary.

What’s less known is the fact that the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary – contains a large variety of snakes and amphibians.

Newly Added Goa Experience
12 April 2019
Excellent
Simply WOW!! Quite a thrillophilic journey with immensely warm hospitality, perfect planned schedules and of course amazing travel. As planned we were picked up @7 in the morning and were taken to the falls which happens to be around 100 kms. Bus they provide are very comfortable and AC will also be sufficient to beat the heat of sultry Goa. We also covered a landmark church of Goa enroute. They will give you around 15 20 mins to get that holy feel. Once we reached the venue we were given time to have breakfast, meanwhile the guide arranged tickets for the whole group and settled us up in the bolero which takes you from there further. It was again a Splendid journey of 45 mins through mahavir national park where you will cross several streams also. Pure off roading and adventurous experience. From the parking u have to walk for 5 mins to finally reach the destination which, you undoubtedly will feel deserving enough to have travelled for. Such a sublime scene and cool clear water with fishes around you will quench all the tiredness you might have had after traveelinh to several beaches. You get around 1.5 hours in total after final parking out of which for bathing you will get around 45 mins. Caution : please travel with good non slippery shoes as the rocks are too slippery and carelessness might get fatal. No worries though, you wont drown as they will provide you with life jackets so a good news for non swimmers. Post bath again you will be taken back and be served with complimentary lunch in goan style which is quite palatable. Then a short spice plantation tour followed by a return drop to the reapective pick up points. The trip will end in North Goa around 6 evening. ps : If you have time on your goa trip, do visit this place and thrillophilia is definitely a good option to consider coz it will wave off your trip organisational headache.

Superb cycling experience, it was just the 3 of us including the guide and we were able to complete the trip real fast. The bird sanctuary is where we took most of the pics. We went off road through the forest area as well and we could find the railway lines located there. Couple of steep ups and downs which made cycling challenging. The total distance would be 30 kms. Best I've ever cycled
An unforgettable experience for me. For the first time got a chance to get into snorkeling and see the marine life. Thanks alot guys for an amazing experience.
