Located in the heart of Kolkata, the Victoria Memorial is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a prominent reminder of India’s colonial past. Commissioned by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, the monument was built in memory of Queen Victoria after her death in 1901. The structure is made entirely of white Makrana marble, the same marble used in the Taj Mahal, giving it a timeless and elegant appearance. Inside, the Victoria Memorial Hall Museum houses over 25 galleries showcasing rare paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, photographs, weapons, and historical artifacts from the British period. St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most prominent churches in Kolkata and an outstanding example of colonial-era Gothic architecture. Completed in 1847, the cathedral was designed by Major William Nairn Forbes during British rule. It is located near the Victoria Memorial and serves as the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Calcutta. The cathedral combines Gothic Revival design with Indo-European elements suited to the Indian climate.The structure features pointed arches, stained-glass windows, tall spires, and a striking central tower inspired by Norwich Cathedral in England. Inside, the cathedral has high vaulted ceilings, wooden pews, and memorial plaques dedicated to British officials and soldiers. The stained-glass windows depict biblical scenes, including the life of Saint Paul, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere. South Park Street Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in India and a famous historical landmark in Kolkata. Established in 1767, the cemetery is the final resting place for many soldiers, British officers, and famous figures from the colonial era. It has wonderful Gothic and Indo-Saracenic architecture with pyramidal structures, grand tombs, and intricate carvings that show 18th- and 19th-century design styles.In the cemetery, some of notable personalities like Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a famous poet and educator and Sir William Jones, founder of the Asiatic Society were buried here. It is surrounded by moss-covered pathways and tall trees, offering a peaceful atmosphere.
