Geker Sinying, or Ganga Lake, is a beautiful and serene water body located 6 km from Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh. Surrounded by a vibrant forest of ferns, bamboo groves, and native orchids, the famous emerald green waters reflect the forest and the sky, creating a picturesque setting. The name Geker Sinying in the Nyishi tribal language means “confined lake”, owing to its secluded and peaceful setting, making it one of the best places to visit in Itanagar.
The lake is believed to be sacred by the local communities and holds a lot of cultural significance. For the indigenous Nyishi tribe, the lake is considered sacred and is associated with several local myths and spiritual beliefs. Traditionally, it is believed to be protected by forest spirits, and rituals were often performed to seek blessings for harmony and well-being.
Visitors can enjoy boating on the still waters, stroll along the forested trails, or simply relax in the quiet natural surroundings. The lake is also a popular picnic and family outing spot, with small shelters and basic amenities available nearby. A favourite among locals and tourists alike, Geker Sinying offers a perfect escape from the bustle of town life, especially during misty mornings and cool evenings, when the place feels almost mystical in its quiet charm.
