Gripsholm Castle, Sweden

About Gripsholm Castle

The early history of the palace dates back to the 1370s when it was built as a fort by the Bo Jonsson group. It was later sold to Queen Margaret I and ever since then, it has passed through a lot of hands. The last royal family to gain control of this house was the House of Vasa. Today it is also one of the most well-preserved theatres dating back to the 18th century. The interiors and the rooms are well preserved, including those of Duke Karl’s chamber. The castle also has an internationally renowned portrait collection that showcases historical figures dating back from King Gustav’s period.

Ever since the 1600s, deers have been in this pasture land belonging to the royal family of Gripsholm. Today, it is used as a natural reservation area with more than 100 deer. Ever since 1860, King Karl XV used this part of the city for walking but retaining the presence of the animals. Here, you can spot deer like the fallow deer, but you can also spot endangered species too, like the rare beetle.
