About Gundert Bungalow

Gundert Bungalow is located in the scenic town of Thalassery in Kerala's Kannur district. It is a monument to the region's rich cultural and linguistic heritage. It was built in 1839 by Dr. Hermann Gundert, a German missionary and scholar. It is here where Dr. Gundert compiled the first Malayalam dictionary. He even translated the Bible into Malayalam in this bungalow.

The bungalow boasts of sprawling verandas and colonial aesthetics. It offers a glimpse into 19th-century missionary life. The house is set against a backdrop of lush greenery and overlooks the Arabian Sea. Inside, you can see artefacts and personal belongings of the Gundert family. Here, you can also find rare manuscripts that highlight his work and its impact on Malayalam literature.

Today, the Gundert Bungalow is a significant attraction for linguists, historians, and tourists. It is protected under the Archaeological Survey of India, ensuring its legacy endures. The bungalow's setting in a quiet, picturesque area makes it a perfect spot for a visit.
