What are the best paintings in the Louvre museum?

  1. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa- The most renowned and accomplished work of Vinci, doesn’t need any introduction. Over time, the painting has established a narrative of being the most unconventional work in European art with its striking features inspired by the techniques brought in by the era of Renaissance which makes it historically important.
  2. Liberty Leading the People- It’s an oil painting painted by Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution in Paris. Overtime, the artwork has been established as the painter's most popular painting which he had painted after witnessing the mobilisation of mass against the, then, autocratic ruler Charles X.
  3. The Raft of Medusa- Painted during the era of Romanticism in French by Theodore Gericault, the iconic painting marked the seismic shift from idealised themes to more dramatic subjects of Romanticism. Inspired by the newly introduced theme of realism Theodore had painted a recent gruesome event with no noble subjects but the regular citizens starving on a raft after surviving a shipwreck adrift. The details of these horrific incidents have been greatly captured by the painter in his extremely detailed work.
  4. The Death of the Virgin- This particular painting of Caravaggio is a turn away from the traditional style of representation of Goddess Virgin. He has done remarkable work in capturing the intensity of emotions into a few feet canva, and has enhanced the painting with the strokes of contrasting colours.

If you would notice his approach towards sculpting you would realise the influence of renaissance on his work.
  3. Winged Victory of Samothrace- The sculpture has been meticulously designed as its greatness is reflected in the intricate anatomical features of the body which seems very much real. Made by an unknown artist in 190 BC the sculpture reflects the pinnacle of the Ancient Roman times as the artist has done an unmatchable work.
  4. Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss- One of the finest sculptures created by Antonio Canova, captures the divine moment between Psyche and her true lover Cupid whose warmed embrace had broken her spell of sleep. The perfect marble work representation of Psyche and her lover, becomes more enchanting with the motion shown in the statue.
