History Of Piazza Della Repubblica
Piazza Della Repubblica was initially the site of the city's forum, the central hold of the city of Rome. A chronicler called Giovanni Villani was recorded saying that the city square sported a temple to Mars, the Roman god of war, on or near this site. He stated that Mars was the city's guardian deity, which explained the city's warlike character.
During 1865 to 1871, it was announced that the city of Florence will be replanned and will be designated as the capital of Italy. This resulted in a lot of renovations and revamping of the monuments which in turn resulted in the current appearance of the Piazza.
In this period, known as the Risanamento, significant parts of the city centre were destroyed. A decision to broaden the square was made which allowed the demolition of buildings of high archaeological importance including medieval towers, churches, castles of noble families, as well as craftsmen's shops and residences.
