About The Hauptwache

Housing an eclectic mix of former and contemporary buildings Hauptwache is one of Frankfurt’s bustling pedestrian areas which is well worth a visit on your trip. As you arrive at the plaza, you cannot help being awestruck by the imposing decorative Hauptwache structure which is the cynosure of the plaza with its red sandstone exterior and three chimneys roof. It is fabled that this building was a favourite of the great German author and statesman Joann Wolfgang Goethe.

The plaza was named after its Baroque building which is the plaza’s focal point. It was originally built in 1729 with the intention to house Frankfurt’s mercenaries. Later the building was converted into a police station and a prison. At present Haupstwache operates as a meeting point for the locals.
