One of the major tourist places to visit in York is the York City Walls which is known to be the longest circuit of medieval city walls in the country. This magnificent wall is the longest of all medieval town walls in England and is 3.4 km long. Often referred to as York City Walls, the Roman Walls, or the Bar Walls, the wall was built in the 14th century and has four major gateways or bars - Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar, and Micklegate Bar. There is also one Victorian gateway as well as 45 towers on the wall. You can complete the entire circuit of 3.4 km in approximately two hours.
