Traveller Insight

Many travellers choose bundled package trip to Darjeeling because accommodation, transfers, and sightseeing are pre-arranged. One traveller Sherween Mendon from Mumbai, who booked Wonders of Gangtok | Journey Through Lakes & Tibetan Heritage in February 2026 described their Darjeeling-Sikkim trip as "The trip was really nice, comfortable, hassle free and fun. Ambika gave us a good deal and itinerary. Cab Drivers were experienced and very helpful. So overall it was a good tour. " highlighting how everything ran according to the planned itinerary.

What Makes Darjeeling Tour Package Price Go Up or Down

  • Seasonal demand: Prices surge by 30%–50% during peak spring (March to May) and autumn months (October to November), then drop significantly during the heavy monsoon season (July to September).
  • Hotel choice and room view: Choosing a basic valley-view homestay keeps costs low, while upgrading to a premium heritage property on Chowrasta Mall Road, particularly one with clear views of Mt Kanchenjunga, can significantly increase the package price.
  • Vehicle type and sharing: Opting for a dedicated private SUV (such as an Innova or Xylo) on mountain roads adds considerably to your transport costs. Choosing shared jeeps or smaller hatchbacks is a straightforward way to keep expenses down.
  • Toy train add-on inclusions: Adding the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) heritage joyride to your itinerary raises your activities spend. Leaving it out is one of the easiest ways to trim the overall package price.
  • Itinerary customisation and extensions: Extending your trip to include nearby destinations such as Gangtok, Kalimpong, or Pelling increases travel distances and raises the overall cost due to additional permit requirements and transit expenses.

Best Time to Visit Darjeeling for All Indian Travellers

Peak Season (March to May and October to November)

This is considered the ideal time to visit Darjeeling if you want clear weather, excellent mountain views, pleasant temperatures, and a smooth overall travel experience. This period is highly recommended by Thrillophilia. Whether it is watching the sunrise from Tiger Hill or walking through the tea gardens, the experience feels especially enjoyable during this season.

Why is this the best time to visit?

  • Temperatures remain pleasant and usually range between 10°C and 20°C.
  • Skies are comparatively clearer, especially during autumn, offering excellent views of Kanchenjunga.
  • This is also the flowering season, making it ideal for photography and outdoor experiences.
  • Road conditions generally remain smoother, making travel more convenient.

Winter Season (December to February)

Winter in Darjeeling feels calm, quiet, and especially captivating. The season is usually less crowded, which means you can enjoy your trip at a slower and more relaxed pace. The cold weather adds charm to the surroundings, with foggy mornings, warm evenings in cafés, and peaceful streets. This is an ideal time to visit Darjeeling if you prefer fewer crowds.

Why is it a good time to visit?

  • Temperatures usually drop between 2°C and 7°C, making it ideal for experiencing chilly mountain weather.
  • Tourist crowds remain relatively low, creating a quieter travel experience.
  • The atmosphere feels cosy, with misty views and peaceful surroundings.
  • Snowfall is more likely in nearby higher-altitude areas than in central Darjeeling.
  • This period is ideal for relaxed off-season travel.

Monsoon Season (June to August)

Monsoon gives Darjeeling a completely different character. The mist-covered hills create a cinematic landscape, while lush greenery makes the region especially scenic during this time. Monsoon is often considered an underrated season for visiting Darjeeling. It is best suited for travellers who are comfortable with a more flexible and laid-back itinerary.

What to expect during your monsoon visit?

  • Rainfall can be heavy, with cloudy weather across most parts of the region.
  • Travellers should be prepared for a higher possibility of landslides.
  • Mountain visibility may remain lower because of fog.
  • Crowds are fewer, making travel quieter and more peaceful.
  • Tea gardens look especially vibrant and green during this season.

How to Reach Darjeeling – For Indian Travellers

Arrival at Bagdogra (IXB) and NJP

Most Darjeeling travel package from Thrillophilia begin from one of two main arrival points: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP). These are the closest and most convenient entry points for reaching Darjeeling from across India. Bagdogra is located about 70 km from Darjeeling and has regular flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, making it the fastest option for most travellers. NJP, on the other hand, is one of the busiest railway stations in Eastern India and offers excellent train connectivity, which is perfect for budget travellers.

Most Thrillophilia itineraries are structured to include pre-arranged pickups from both Bagdogra and NJP, ensuring a hassle-free arrival experience. You don’t have to worry about any transportation issues during your trip.

Key points:

  • Bagdogra is the nearest airport to Darjeeling
  • NJP is the closest major railway station to Darjeeling and also offers a wide range of connectivity.
  • Direct transfers are included in all Thrillophilia packages.
  • These are generally the ideal starting points for all Darjeeling itineraries.

Road Journey (a 3-4 hour climb)

From Bagdogra or NJP, your journey to Darjeeling continues by road. This is the most practical mode of transport. The drive usually takes up to 3 to 4 hours, depending on weather and traffic conditions. This is a fully uphill drive and more than just a transfer. You get your first immersive experience of the beautiful hills.

This trip follows the scenic Hill Cart Road that goes through scenic towns like Kurseong, which is famous for its tea gardens and a laid-back colonial charm. In some drives, the driver can also take you to Darjeeling through the Mirik Route, which is a little longer but is quieter and known for its serene landscapes and lake views. The drive itself becomes an essential part of the Darjeeling experience.

Key points:

  • Duration: The entire road trip takes 3-4 hours approximately.
  • Main routes: The main routes come via Kurseong (popular) or the route that comes from Mirik (scenic alternative)
  • Mode of transport: Private or shared cabs, depending on your selection of packages.

The UNESCO Toy Train Experience ( NJP to Darjeeling)

The Darjeeling railway, popularly known as the Toy Train, is one of the major attractions of Darjeeling. This heritage train journey operates from NJP to Darjeeling and takes around 7-8 hours to cover 80 km, making it a slow but scenic experience. Travellers interested in this journey can check schedules and availability on the official IRCTC website.

Key points:

  • A full NJP-to-Darjeeling ride takes approximately 7-8 hours.
  • This is best suited for train enthusiasts and heritage travel lovers.
  • A 'Joy Ride' from Ghoom to Darjeeling is ideal for most leisure travellers.

Top Places to Visit and Things to Do in Darjeeling

Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a longer North East holiday, here are the top places that are added in your itineraries to help you find the best Darjeeling tour package for your travel style and budget.

Sunrise at Tiger Hill (Mount Kanchenjunga View)

One of the most memorable experiences in Darjeeling includes a morning 3 am visit to Tiger Hill. This is one of the most memorable ways to begin the day. You will have to drive through the quiet, misty roads and reach the viewpoint, and as the first light appears, the snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga start turning golden, creating an unreal view. If you are really lucky and the weather remains perfectly clear, you can also get a glimpse of Mount Everest. This experience is way more than just the view; the cold mountain air and stillness make this truly special and worth the early wake-up.

Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery

Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery are major inclusions in your Darjeeling itinerary. Batasia Loop offers a unique perspective of Darjeeling, where the toy train tracks curve beautifully through the beautifully maintained gardens. It is one of the best places to take a pause and capture the beautiful landscapes.

Just a short distance from the Batasia Loop is the famous Ghoom Monastery, which has a completely different atmosphere; it is quiet, spiritual and calming. It houses a large Maitreya Buddha statue along with prayer flags and chanting sounds, which creates a peaceful contrast to the open viewpoints from here. This overall experience feels very balanced and complete.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and Padmaja Naidu Zoo

If you want to explore something which is beyond the scenic spots, a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park adds depth to your trip. The Institute offers insights into Himalayan mountaineering history, which also includes exhibitions linked to Tenzing Norgay’s climb and other early Everest expeditions.

Right next to HMI, the Zoo focuses on the conservation of rare Himalayan species like red pandas and snow leopards, which are kept in a natural forested environment. Walking through this area feels more than just visiting a tourist spot. This is the perfect way to explore the region's wildlife and mountaineering legacy at your own pace.

Tea Garden Walk and Tasting Session

A visit to Darjeeling is incomplete without spending time in its famous tea gardens and enjoying the world-famous Darjeeling tea. Thrillophilia’s Darjeeling packages include guided visits to tea estates like Happy Valley Tea Estate, where you can walk through the tea gardens and watch the workers pluck tea leaves and also learn about the entire tea-making process. The experience concludes with a tea tasting session overlooking the plantation. Visitors can enjoy freshly brewed Darjeeling tea overlooking the tea estates. This creates a calm and immersive local experience that connects you to the essence of Darjeeling in a way sightseeing alone cannot.

Food Guide (Thukpas, Momos and Darjeeling tea)

Darjeeling’s food is simple, comforting, and well-suited to the cool mountain climate. Freshly prepared hot meals are especially enjoyable in the cool weather. The local cuisine of Darjeeling is highly influenced by Tibetan and Nepali flavours.

Best things to try:

  • Momos: These are perfectly prepared steamed or fried dumplings with veg or meat fillings, which are served with spicy chutney.
  • Thukpa: Thukpa is one of the most comforting foods in the cold weather there. It is a noodle soup that is light and very filling.
  • Darjeeling tea: Darjeeling tea is famous worldwide for its aroma and flavour. It is the best thing to enjoy with beautiful mountain views from your hotel rooms.

Thrillophilia’s Tips for Travellers for a Darjeeling Trip

Packing Guide

Packing for the Darjeeling trip is not just about heavy winter gear; it is mainly about how smartly you can layer your clothing. The weather can shift from warm during the day to chilly in the evenings, so it is important to layer your clothing accordingly. For morning Tiger Hill visits, it is recommended to wear something heavy as it might remain very cold at that time.

What to keep in mind while packing:

  • Carry more layers of clothes than heavy jackets
  • Keep light woollens even during summers, as the weather fluctuates a lot.
  • Always pack comfortable shoes for walking on the hilly terrain.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and small backpacks should also be packed for day trips.

Local Transportation (Shared vs Private Taxis)

Travelling around in Darjeeling is completely road-based, and your options are mainly between shared or private cabs provided by Thrillophilia. Shared taxis are perfect for budget travellers as they are cheaper and operate on fixed routes and timings. Whereas private taxis give you flexibility and comfort, and also the scope to stop for views and breaks, which is something very important in hill station trips.

How to choose?

  • Private Taxis: These are much more comfortable than other options and are flexible, making them ideal for families and relaxed travelling.
  • Shared Taxis: These are a much more budget-friendly option for travelling and include fixed routes, making them okay for shorter trips.

Thrillophilia Note: Our packages mainly include private transfers for your ease and comfort.

Permits Required for Sikkim-Based Itineraries

If your Darjeeling trip includes Sikkim (Gangtok or North Sikkim), there’s one important thing that you should not overlook, which is permits. At the entry point of Rangpo, Indian travellers are required to show a valid ID proof, while international travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state, but it's very friendly to international visitors in 2026.

The good part is Thrillophilia usually handles all of these permits as they are included in the packages, so you don’t have to deal with the process yourself. Still, it is important to carry valid ID proofs and passport-size photographs. For higher altitude areas like Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass, additional permits are required, but Thrillophilia arranges them all for you.

Things to remember:

  • It is important to carry valid ID proofs for your trip.
  • Permits are checked at the Rangpo entry point.
  • There are certain extra permits needed for higher altitude areas (arranged by Thrillophilia).

Travellers frequently mention that customised planning and on-ground coordination help simplify North East itineraries. One reviewer Prathamesh Mulay from Mumbai who booked Wonders of Gangtok | Journey Through Lakes & Tibetan Heritage noted that their trip was "The local tour guides and driver-cum-guides were exceptionally skilled, professional, and added great value to our journey. That said, all commitments were honored, and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Team has planned and executed the whole tour with amazing clarity from permits to everything. It was so seamless especially across multiple destinations."

Reviews like this highlight the value of having permits, transfers, local coordination, and sightseeing planned in advance.

I am madly and deeply in love with Sikkim. I can't believe a place like this can be so beautiful and still people are unaware about it. Walking through narrow pathways and tiny hamlets on the way make this place all the more interesting and worth the effort.

Positives: - Overall great trekking experience. - Difficulty level was exactly what i was looking for. - Schedule was good and engaging - Bijay (our guide) was too good. He took care of everything (keeping our morale up, ensuring that we checked in properly to each stay area etc etc). - Food was decent throughout - Stay was not too bad. So basically no complaints. Special thanks to Sonam ji and Bijay ji.

The trek was very nice and well planned by the Thrillophilia and the Sandakphu & Beyond team. It was a easy to medium trek for regular trekkers but if you're going for the first time then it may feel like medium to hard. Overall the views very nice, temperature varied a lot from 18-20 C to -2 C. Totally recommended

Actually the local operator told me that the phalut trek was not going to happen just for me  . But Mr Priyanshu Sharma made it all possible with just one call of mine . Rather I was really disheartened when the local operator told me they have already informed the thrillophilia officials seven days prior that no one is opting for phalut trek which was my first priority . So I was really very happy when all the arrangements were made for me. I would also like to mention about Mr Nirje Mukhya who was the guide throughout the entire trek .He was really very kind and made the entire trek very lively. Thanks to Thrillophilia !
