About Chopta

This stunning hill station is considered to be amongst the best mountainside getaways and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Uttarakhand. Located in the Garhwal region, it is often referred to as the ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ for its scenic beauty.

This largely unexplored destination is the perfect destination for not only nature lovers but also for those who love adventures that come with trekking, rock climbing, camping, and spotting rare Himalayan wildlife. It is one of the few places to offer views of 41 best-known Himalayan peaks like Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, etc. The forested beauty of the place is further accentuated by emerald-green meadows and the mysticism that comes with 1000-year-old worship places and legends.

Highlight of the place: The 1000-year-old Tungnath Temple, one of the highest Shiva Temples in the world including other ancient temples like Kalimath, Ukhimath, and Omkar Ratneshwar Mahadev. Explore treks like Chandrashila, Devaria Tal, Rohini Bugyal, etc. Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary for spotting the elusive musk deer, Himalayan Griffon, snow leopards, Himalayan pit viper, etc.

Best time to visit: Summer (March-June) is the best time to visit Chopta to escape the heat of the plains. Travellers who love wintersports must-visit during winters (November-March) when the place is shrouded in thick snow. The monsoon season (July-August) brings landslides, and its best to check with the locals before travelling.

We have trekked with two kids (4 and 8 years) and my parents (65 years) late Oct to beginning of November. Both days of trekking were really stunning, unforgettable beautiful views! We have rented the mule for our younger child first day which proved to be a smart decision and he went up all the way. The second day unfortunately being out of season there were no mules available so he only went part of the way... made it to the temple (the last part of the trek the Chandrashilla peak is quite steep and tricky and probably not for the little kids anyway)... It was very well organized, the Thrillophilia contact was always very helpful and the actual company who provided the treking very much also....the only tricky part was that the forest fee for the foreigners was not included (for the Indians it was) in the price even though it was written in the confirmation so that it something which should to be adjusted in the details! The Himalayan highway is being renovated so prepare for quite a bumpy and dusty ride above the scary cliffs!

This is one of the my best Place to visit and to see the natural beauty . Any one can visit this place with his/her family or friend. Very small place. It’s the starting point for a 4 km trek to Tunganath and from there another 1.5 km to Chandrashila. it’s so refreshing to see the Snow-capped Himalayas, so up, close and personal.

The Chopta Chandrashila trail goes through paradise and you are marvelled at the scenic beauty of the place on each step. Be it the reflection of Chakumbha and adjoining mountains on Deoria Tal, the starry nights or the mountains basking in moonlight. On day 2 you go through forests blooming with rhododendrons and beautiful green meadows. The final trek to peak is majestic with walk through snow clad woods and elevated fields of snow. May is the time if you want greenery and December/January if you are looking for snow. Anybody fit enough to jog mile or two can take the trek.

This was my first North India trek. It was one of the most beautiful places I have been till date. The hospitality was superb with the Trek Leader and even the driver. The food and cottages were awesome and delicious. I already planning one more trip in Uttarakand with my family. I really in love with this place.
