Mount Katao is a secluded high-altitude spot tucked in North Sikkim, about 28 kilometres from Lachung. Perched around 15,000 feet, it treats travellers to sweeping views of icy slopes, glacial valleys, and sky-high summits. Unlike the louder Yumthang or Zero Point, Katao welcomes only a handful of guests each day, giving nature lovers and photographers a quiet corner to work and unwind. In winter deep drifts cloak the ground, for visitors who can strap on skis or boards and glide through fresh powder. By spring the same trails explode with wild blooms, from red rhododendrons to golden poppies poking through the rocks, making it one of the best places to include in your North Sikkim tour package.
Due to its proximity to the Indo-China border, visiting requires an Inner Line Permit, which can be arranged by authorised tour operators. The drive itself is scenic, albeit bumpy, adding to the adventure.
Mount Katao is often clubbed with Yumthang Valley and Lachung on North Sikkim itineraries, offering a perfect mix of alpine adventure, solitude, and raw Himalayan beauty away from the crowds.
