Wanla Gompa Overview

Wanla Gompa stands as Ladakh's oldest and most sacred monastery, tracing its roots back to the 1st century. Despite its unassuming architectural style, the monastery boasts an impressive collection of artwork portraying Buddha, Bodhisattva, and mandalas. Adding to its allure, the monastery grounds house a 12th-century castle constructed by its founder, Lama Rinchen Zangpo. Explore this historical treasure on your Ladakh trip for a glimpse into ancient Buddhist culture.

Wanla Gompa is a medieval Buddhist monastery in Wanla hamlet. The monastery is said to have been built around the year 1000 AD. Lama Rinchen Zangpo, a saint of the time, translated Lord Buddha's teachings into Tibetan which led him to lead the devotees and construct this monastery.

Lamayuru monastery is located quite close to Wanla Gompa and is regarded as the 'mother' gompa to Wanla. The monastery is one of the 108 monasteries that were built with the help of the King of Ladakh between 958 and 1055 AD.

The three-story figure of the 11-headed Mahakaruna or Avalokiteshwara is the monastery's main attraction. Many artworks of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and traditional Tibetan designs may also be found at the Gompa. People go from all over the world to seek the blessings of Buddha at this monastery, which is regarded as the most auspicious of all the monasteries in Ladakh.

Visitors may see the ruins of a 12th-century castle as well as a newly erected structure when visiting the monastery. In addition to the monastery's holiness and scenic beauty, many find the 4-5-hour hike to get there to be one of the most sublime treks in the Ladakh region.
