About Zorawar Fort

The General Zorawar Singh Fort, also known as Zorawar Fort Leh, is located on the Skara Road in Leh, Ladakh. Once a military defense base, the fort is now a popular tourist destination drawing thousands of tourists from across Ladakh. With its stone facade, its lovely courtyard and its museums standing testament to the Valley’s war-torn past, Zorawar fort is one of the most interesting attractions in Leh.

The fort is made up of various tiny buildings that date back to the nineteenth century and are formed of sun-dried blocks composed of stones, mud, and clay. Today, this historic fort functions as a museum and is a preserved site of national importance.

The fort buildings are divided by theme- Artifact Room, History Room, Zorawar Museum and so on. Each building has permanent exhibits of articles, newspaper cuttings and other displays detailing the history of the Fort, and of the Sikh struggle in Ladakh

However, the Zorawar Fort grounds contain more than just historical displays. On one side of the Museum nestles a mosque; almost side by side stands a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. A natural freshwater spring in the courtyard adds an air of freshness to the place. The Zorawar Fort also features a canteen with views to the Himalayan Stok ranges, where one can stop for light snacks.
