Yarab Tso Lake

Often dubbed as the ‘Hidden Lake’ of Ladakh, the Yarab Tso Lake is truly the region’s best kept secrets. Yarab Tso lives in the peaceful environs of Sumur hamlet, around 15 kilometers from the holy Diskit Gompa in Nubra valley.

The sight of this lake, which can be viewed after a 20-minute climb upward from the Panamikk town, is quite enchanting. Tso Yarab is one of Nubra Valley's holiest and highest-altitude lakes, and is closely associated with the story of a monk. The stunning aquamarine water, backed by the picturesque peaks rising behind it, paints the most beautiful picture for the visitors.

Owing to its secluded nature, the Yarab Tso Lake is often overlooked by tourists. The lake, however, forms an excellent destination for hiking. A trek along the Nubra desert leads one to this fantastic lake.

Although Yarab Tso does not have any organized facilities for adventure sports, it does make for a lovely picnic spot at least. Owing to the sacred nature of the lake however, Yarab Tso is often frequented by locals, and may remain busy during the months of Buddhist festivals

The best time to visit Yarab Tso Lake would be during the warmer months of summer, ideally between May and September. The weather in Nubra Valley remains frighteningly cold during the winter months, and the lake and its vicinity remains frozen over.

The Yarab Tso is located along the Nubra Valley, so the best way to travel to the lake is by road. One can hire a car from Nubra or Sumur Village to get to a certain point, then trek the rest of the way to the lake.
