Wildlife in Changthang Sanctuary:

Although the climate here is cold and harsh, a staggering variety of animals, plants and other creatures can be found making their homes in the Changthang Sanctuary.
Birds: The Sanctuary is home to over 300 species of birds, both migratory and resident ones. The wetland region is a common playhouse for birds, with species such as the brahminy duck and the black necked crane frequently spotted here. One can also catch a glimpse of birds such as the golden eagle, the black tern and the Tibetan sandgrouse.
Ulungates: Ulungates, or hoofed animals, are a common sighting at the sanctuary. The Kiang or the Tibetan wild ass is the most popular resident here. One also comes across the bharal, or the blue sheep, who’s coat turns reddish in summer and bluish in the harshest winters. Climbing further upward, one also catches a sight of the Tibetan antelope, the Asiatic ibex, and the Tibetan argali.
Predators: The grass-eating animals form the lowest bulk of the food chain in Changthang. Lying above them are the predators: the Palla’s cat and red foxes are two of the most commonly sighted predators here. If one observes closely, one may even catch a sight of the Snow Leopard, whose power is so strong that it is often referred to as the ‘ghost of the mountains’.

Tips for visiting the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary:

- Although the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary remains open throughout the year, it would be better to visit the sanctuary during the summer months. The extreme weather during winter may be unsuitable for those not used to the harsh cold.
- The Changthang weather tends to be chilly even during the summer evenings and early mornings, so carrying multiple layers would be advisable.
- Although one can explore Changthang without a guide, it would perhaps be easier to take the help of a local guide who is well versed with the area.
- Spend at least two days in Leh to get your body acclimatized to the weather before proceeding to visit the Wildlife Sanctuary; the high altitude climate may induce headache and nausea.
- Visiting the Wildlife Sanctuary requires an Inner Line Permit, so make sure you are equipped with one before attempting to enter the area
