Paradesi Synagogue

Situated in a quarter of Old Cochin known as the Jew Town, the Paradesi Synagogue is one of the seven synagogues of the Jewish communities in Cochin. The word “Paradesi” in its colloquial meaning refers to ‘foreigners”, applied to the synagogue back in 1567 when it was constructed by Spanish-speaking Jews.

The synagogue is the oldest and is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area still in use. The synagogue contains many rare antique items among others dating back to when the Jewish synagogue was created in Kerala.

A valuable collection of copper plates belonging to the 4th century is preserved in the synagogue among other priceless items like gold crowns presented to the Jewish Community by the Kings of Cochin and Travancore, the first five books of Old Testament encased in gold and silver and many such intriguing antiques.
