The Killing Fields, Phnom Penh

This is one of the massive graveyards in Cambodia. These are the places in which millions of people were tortured to death during the notorious Khmer Rouge rule in Cambodia which lasted from 1975 to 1979. This highly cruel rule came to an end when Vietnam took over the control of Democratic Kampuchea.



Highlights
– Close to 20000 mass grave sites were identified in the Killing Fields area in Cambodia. Evidences indicate that around 1.38 million victims were killed in these areas. There is a huge stupa at the Killing Fields located at Choeung Ek and this is adorned with the skulls of the victims who were killed in the area.
 
Location – Choeung Ek, Phnom Pehn and is considered as the area of mass genocide in Cambodia.

Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

This is one of the top tourist attractions in Phnom Penh. This gives you a glimpse of the lifestyle of the royal people.

Highlights – The Royal Palace still serves as the residences of Cambodian rulers. The construction of this palace was started during 1866, when Phnom Penh became the new capital of Cambodia, replacing Oudong. You cannot help but wonder at the similarity in the architecture style found in the Royal Palace found in Thailand. Phnom Penh Royal Palace, Phnom Penh

Phnom Tamao Zoo, Phnom Penh

National Museum Of Cambodia, Phnom Penh

When you visit Cambodia with intent to learn more about its history and archaeology, you should definitely visit one of the top tourist hot spots in the country – National Museum of Cambodia.

Highlights – This was established during the 1920 and it is the largest museum in Cambodia housing exquisite cultural and historic items representing the authentic Khmer culture. There are close to 14000 items here including bronze and ceramic items, damaged statues from many centuries ago of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, wooden and pottery items belong to pre-Angkorian era and many other impressive items. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

The Tuol Sleng Genocise Museum is an explicit replica of the history that affected Cambodia during the 70s under the reign of Khmer Rouge. It symbolizes the darkened genocide period Cambodia has gone through before some years. Originally a school, the building was turned to become a prison and it houses the tombs of those victims and it still knows as the remnants of a Killing Field. The word Tuol Sleng means ‘Hill of the Poisonous Trees’. The prisoners were regularly tortured and beaten up and the museum possesses the graphics, pictures and writings came out during imprisonment of people which exhibit the extreme cruelty imposed by the Khmer reign. It is not advisable for kids to visit the museum. The entry starts at 07:00 AM and ends at 05:00 PM.

Cambodia–Vietnam Friendship Monument

Built to commemorate the previous alliance between Vietnam and Cambodia, there is the Cambodia- Vietnam Friendship Monument. It is located in the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh and the monument is one of the largest concrete construction of Cambodia. Botum Park near the monument gives it more tourist approach and the Royal Palace is also near to both these attractions. It has the heroic statues of the soldiers from both the countries along with an image of a lady carrying a child that symbolizes the Cambodian civilians. It has got a lot of political attention since many revolutions, rallies and political gatherings for many relevant reasons. The monument established during the communist government after the eventful Khmer empire got down of the throne has a glittering golden top.
