Places to Visit in Sonamarg

Zoji La is a high mountain pass located in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is one of the most challenging and scenic passes in the region, reaching an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet. Crossing Zoji La offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and serves as a crucial link between Srinagar and Leh for adventurous travelers and traders.

A perfect winter spot, Zero point is a treat to your eyes with snow-capped mountains, streams, and valleys consisting of maple trees. The road to Zero Point indicates caution with narrow and rough roads that make it a difficult drive. The destination is covered in snow all year but the best time to travel is between February and June.

Thajiwas glacier is located 3 km from Sonmarg is the “Jewel of Kashmir” with its frozen lake, snow-covered mountains, fir and pine trees, alpine meadows, gushing waterfalls, and small streams. A favorite destination for trek lovers, it is also known for activities like sledding, and pony riding. The ideal time to visit is between April and October.

Baltal Valley located 15 Km from Sonmarg, along the Sindh River on the Srinagar-Leh highway is famous for its great treks and for being a fantastic camping site. The valley is mind-blowing with its waterfalls, glaciers, mighty peaks, and meadows. The best time to visit is between April and September.

Krishansar lake is located at 4000 meters from Sonmarg and is a marvel which freezes during the winter and whose water changes its color according to the climate of the day. The lake is popular for being a major trekking and fishing destination. The best time to visit is between June and September.

Gadsar Lake is located 8 Km from Sonmarg and is a paradise for tourists who enjoy fishing. The lake is seasonal for its creation when the snow melts, so the best time to visit is during June and September. It is recommended to drive to the lake as Gadsar pass treats your eyes to some magnificent scenic views.

Gangabal Lake situated in North Srinagar is known for its greenish-blue waters, a variety of fish especially brown trout, lush green meadows, and its religious significance for being a home of Lord Shiva. The best way to reach the lake is by trekking or horse riding. Due to the lake being covered in snow during winter, May to October would be a good time for a visit.

Nilagrad is located 6 Km from the stunning Sonmarg. The sight of Nilagrad merging with the Indus River, flowing through different mountains adds to the sheer beauty of the place. The River is red in color and is said to have medicinal properties, rendering it sacred by the local community. The river is open and can be visited throughout the year.

White water rafting is what Shutkari bridge is known for and tourists flock in large numbers to be a part of the Baltal to Shutkari Bridge expedition. Exploring this bridge is one of the most interesting and thrilling ways to tour Sonamarg. Satsar Lake is situated at high altitudes and originates from the confluence of seven rivers. The lake is a prominent camping site among tourists. The charming landscape of the lake consisting of beautiful meadows, and rocky hills of the Himalayas make it perfect to set up a tent on a sunny day to relax and take a break!

Vishansar the “lake of Lord Vishnu” is a high-altitude lake, 20 km from Sonmarg. The water body freezes during winter however as the summer sets in, the stunning landscape with its bright green meadows and greenish-blue water will surely leave you mind blown. The lake is most popular for camping and trekking.

Sarbal village located in the northeastern Kashmir is one of the last Hamlets that has sustained its charm and gives us a snippet of the local life. The famous trek route through Sarbal is much loved by tourists. Starting from Sindh River, the trek offers an unforgettably stunning landscape view. Camping and photography are also common among tourists.

Table Top is one of the most prominent campsites in Kashmir and is covered during the ‘Kashmir great lakes trek’ that starts from Sonmarg. It offers a breathtaking view of the entire Sonmarg, from atop. Set up a tent and spend the night under the cool breeze of the starry night, with some Maggi and Kahwa to warm yourself.

Nichinnai is a popular pathway during the trekking journey to Krishansar Lake, Vishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake, and Gangabal Lake. A famous attraction is the frozen glacier that is on the way. The Sonmarg tourist places surrounding the pass are equally popular and therefore tourists can cover many attractions in one go. The trek is challenging however, it is gifted with the most stunning landscape.

Narang is a small village 50 Km from Sriniagar. It is a favorite among campers who take a stop at Narang to rejuvenate themselves before they restart their ‘Kashmir great lakes’ trek. If Narang is in your itinerary then the Narang temple is an attraction that you cannot miss among all the other destinations of historical significance.
