Best Time for Delhi to Spiti Valley Trip

Best time for Delhi - Shimla - Spiti Route

The best time for the Shimla to Spiti route is, well, the entire year! Due to the absence of high mountain passes on this route, which get closed at the time of snowfall, Spiti is accessible for the entire year through this route. This is the best route option for people who want to experience and explore Spiti at their own pace minus the peak season crowds. Use this route to see Spiti’s beauty in early summers or late winters when it is under a heavy snow cover.

Best time for Delhi - Manali - Spiti Route

Since the Manali to Spiti route has mountain passes like Rohtang and Kunzum along with areas like Gramphu and Batal that get heavy snow, this route is open only from the second week of June until 15th of October each year. Out of these months, the best time to visit Spiti from this route is in September, when the monsoons have receded. This allows the roads to be free of treacherous water crossings and landslides and you can spend more time outdoors enjoying your journey.

Delhi to Spiti Valley Road Condition

Road Conditions from Route 1 (Delhi - Shimla - Spiti)

The greatest advantage of taking the Shimla-Spiti route is that the road is mostly in good condition. You will find some of the best and the smoothest road patches between Shimla, Narkanda, Jeori, Karcham, Sangla, and Kalpa.

The road stretches between Narkanda and Jeori, Sangla to Chitkul, and Kalpa to Dhankar are broken. You will have to drive on a dirt road between Dhankar and Pin Valley, as there is no proper road here. You will find slushy and muddy roads at Pangi Nallah, Ribba, and Powari. The roads at Nako, Malling, Sumdo, Tabo, and Shichiling are broken due to frequent landslides and falling stones.

Road Conditions from Route 2 (Delhi - Manali - Spiti)

Taking the Manali-Spiti route is not for the fainthearted. The route is exciting as well as arduous. The road from Manali to Rohtang Pass has muddy patches that are prone to landslides. This road also remains jammed due to the traffic of vehicles. You will be mostly off-roading as you proceed towards Gramphu.

Not only this, you will have to cross a number of slushy patches due to water crossings. The stretch towards Losar, Chhatru, and Batal is extremely bad. You will be driving for quite some time on a dry riverbed that’s dotted with large boulders. The road gets better as you reach Kaza and proceed further into the valley.

Mobile Connectivity

Route 1: Delhi - Shimla – Spiti

You will get good connectivity for all the networks from Delhi to Shimla.
Places like Narkanda, Jeori, Saharan, Sangla, Kalpa, Reckong Peo, Chitkul, and Spello have good Airtel, Vodafone, and BSNL connectivity.
Since only BSNL and MTNL networks (prepaid and postpaid both) work in Spiti, make sure to carry spare connections.
Around Pooh, you will only get a BSNL network, which gets erratic as you cross. Once you reach Nako, it resumes. Till Tabo there is no network.
It is erratic from Tabo to Kaza and smooth at Kaza.
Internet connectivity is sparse on the entire route. You won’t get 4G services. At best, you will have to suffice with GPRS or 2G connectivity.

Route 2: Delhi - Manali – Spiti

All the major networks have good connectivity from Delhi to Manali.
The connections start to get sparse as you proceed towards Rohtang Pass up till Marhi. Between Marhi and Gramphu, there is no network.
At Gramphu, you will get a not-so-good network of Airtel and BSNL. Both vanish as you cross Gramphu.
There is absolutely no network from Chhatru, Chota Dhara, Batal, Kunzum Pass, and Losar. At Losar, you can expect a very feeble BSNL connection.
As you proceed towards Chandratal, the network again vanishes. The connectivity remains intermittent at Komic and Kibber.
The area around Kee Monastery has good connectivity and then it becomes sparse up until Losar.

Safety Tips & Guidelines

Send Enquiry
Always plan your trip with a couple of buffer days. On the mountain roads, kilometers doesn't always translate to the actual time that is taken.

Let your ride to Spiti not be your first big ride. The roads here are treacherous and require some experience in knowing how to maneuver. Having experienced drivers with you will make your trip fun and safe.

Don’t over speed, try dangerous stunts, or drive while fatigued or sleepy.

Know your vehicle before you start on this journey. Know about its fuel efficiency, conditions of its parts, how much weight can it carry, etc.

Keep spare parts and tools in your vehicle.

Learn how to drive through slushy roads and manoeuvring your way.

Get to know the route in and out. There is enough information on the internet.

It is a good idea to keep maps handy as the GPS connection may break in the remote locations.

Keep a list of petrol pumps and ATMs handy. Carry spare fuel and cash for times of emergency.

Information About AMS and Acclimatisation

Send Enquiry
AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness): This is a condition that our bodies go through when we rapidly gain altitude and experience low levels of oxygen in the air. It causes a variety of effects on the body ranging to physical effects to the ones on the brain. The symptoms include:

Constant vomiting
Increased heart rate
Breathlessness
Reduced or lost appetite
Dizziness
Confusion
Severe headache
Nausea

Mostly these symptoms go away on their own. However, if not controlled quickly, they can get complicated and life-threatening resulting in HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema) or HACE (high altitude cerebral edema). A good way to avoid this while travelling to Spiti is taking the Shimla-Spiti route as this allows you to ascend gradually.

Still, if you feel any of the above-mentioned symptoms, make sure to use these tips:

Don’t gain altitude too fast on the trip. In case you experience any AMS symptoms, stay at the same altitude or descend immediately.

Keep a check on yourself and people travelling with you for any of the above-mentioned symptoms.

Don’t consume alcohol or smoke while travelling.

While sleeping at night in a high altitude place, sleep with a pillow rather than on a flat surface. It is best to sleep in an upright position.

Avoid letting your body temperature fluctuate. Don’t use a car heater or AC too much.

Drink lots of water and avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks.

Don’t walk too fast and avoid exertion.

You can use medicines like Diamox, but only after consulting a doctor.

Chew on fresh cloves or garlic to reduce nausea and headache.

Use essential oils of lavender and peppermint to clear your head and aid in breathing.
