Ooty Lake

Ooty Lake is one of the most sparkling lakes in Ooty, which was artificially constructed in 1823 and covers an area of 65 acres, as of today. Eucalyptus grooves around the Lake lend enchantment to the view. Nilgiri mountain railway line, which runs along one of the lake’s bank, adds charm to the surroundings.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) run Boathouse offers activities such as Paddleboats, Rowboats, and Motorboats. Boat races and boat pageantry are held every summer during the month of May, for a couple of days.

A mini-train, an amusement park, and a garden are the other notable features of the boathouse that enthrall the visitors. The TTDC also runs a canteen. The pony rides in front of the boathouse allure the children.

Emerald Lake

Nestled in the Silent Valley National Park, it is one of the lakes in Ooty, known for the entrancing scenic beauty of sunrise and sunset. The river got its name from the emerald color of its waters. Showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the Nilgiri slopes, luxuriant meadows, dense forests, and the sparkling blue emerald waters of the lake hypnotizes the body and intoxicates the mind.

Avalanche Lake

Avalanche Lake, one of the famous Lakes in Ooty, is formed not by an avalanche, but due to a huge landslide that occurred in 1823. Encircled by the rolling terrain containing an array of blooming flowers, which include magnolias, orchids, and rhododendrons supersede any mural or painting done by a mortal.

Pykara Lake

Pykara Lake, which has its genesis in the Mukurthi Peak, traverses the arcs and slopes of the mountain creating awesome landscapes and waterfalls on its way. With two significant waterfalls, one of 180 ft. and the other of 200 ft., amid the lush green forests presents an unparallel scenic beauty that leaves visitors’ spellbound.

This lake, which is an integral part of the hydroelectric power project, is a perfect getaway for nature lovers, couples, honeymooners, and weekend vacationers.

The Boathouse and the restaurant run by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development near the Pykara falls, is an added attraction to the place, as it entices the visitors to take a sojourn and enjoy the pristine atmosphere and picture-perfect countryside.

Kamaraj Sagar

Kamaraj Sagar, one of the most popular Ooty lakes, is situated at a distance of 10 km from Ooty on the slopes of the Wenlock Downs. The lush green slopes, serene blue waters, majestic Dam, and the contiguous pine forest have made it a perfect setting for many of the Bollywood songs.

It is also the most sought after destination by the newlywed couples, nature lovers, and photographers because of its striking natural beauty and pleasant atmosphere. A dam constructed on the Kamaraj Sagar Lake, spread over 400 acres, stretches to 6 km in length and is fed by the rainwater.

It abounds with a variety of birds such as peacocks, storks, kingfishers, cranes, herons, and sunbirds that delight the visitors. Among the animal kingdom, wild boars, Indian bison, barking deer, leopards etc, cohabit the region and is also famed as Sandynalla Reservoir.

Upper Bhavani Lake

One of the lakes in Ooty, which is less known to the outside world, but an enamoring and ‘a must see’ tourist spot in Ooty is the Upper Bhavani Lake. Seated in the hilly regions of Nilgiri district, above the Avalanche area in Ooty.

It requires prior permission of the Forest Dept. to visit this place. Located 50 km from Ooty the visitors need to hire private transport to reach Avalanche Forest check post. From there eco-tour vehicles with guides will take the visitors to the Upper Bhavani Lake.

Enroute to the Lake, visitors will get a chance to visit the Cauliflower Sholas, Thalai Bhavani (Bhavani Amman Temple), and Lakkidi, the backwaters of Upper Bhavani Reservoir. The rolling tea gardens, blooming flowers, sholas (stunted evergreen tropical forests), and grasslands present a great spectacle. Fog and mist that transcends green mountains and blue waters of the lake add an air of romanticism to the place.

Bellikkal Lake

One of the Ooty lakes, which allures and gratifies all kinds of people; adventurists, wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, bird watchers and honeymooners alike is the Bellikkal Lake.

It was a truly amazing experience for me and my friend. We reached the place before the check in time but still without a hesitation the staff managed to accommodate us in our tent leaving us enough time to explore the beautiful surrounding and embark on our own adventure. The surrounding area was not even close to what we expected.. the beauty and the calming sound of nature itself is enough to make you forget all your troubles and the busy life. We were visiting ooty for the first time and we came across this out of nowhere and booked it right away and when we reached the place the next day we realized it was more than what we had expected for such a cheap price. The tents are comfortable and the staff is really kind and helpful which is a major plus point. This is a must try for all kinds of thrill seekers, adventure hunters, friends, family or simply anyone who is looking to get away from the busy life And escape into serenity.

Great place to watch nature in fullest. The view from the top will amaze you. it was a memorable experience for the group. just the trek was tiring but it was worth it. there were small streams and waterfall allover and a perfect place to enjoy with my friends. also, a night stay was very refreshing away from the city. do this trek i am sure you will all love it like i did.

We recently went to Kodaikanal and Ooty, and it was a fun experience. Both the cities are so beautiful with greenery everywhere, The rose garden in Ooty is so beautiful and the fragrance of roses is so captivating. We even explored and enjoyed a lot at the waterfalls and the view from Dolphin’s Nose was breathtaking.
