A fortress rife with historical significance, it was finished in 1714 and is considered to be one of the strongest fortress in Greece. The fortress played major role in the War of Independence waged against the Turks in the early 1800s.

Today, it is amongst the best preserved architectural monuments from the venetian era. After being converted briefly into a prison, the fortress was thrown open to tourists who were courageous enough to brave its 999 steps.

However, in reality, the steps number a little less than 999. The long climb up is worth it though, because from up there one can see the imposing bastions, the historic chapel of Aghios Andreas, the water tanks, and the castle of the Acronauplia. Needless to say, you will also get an imposing birds-eye view of the city.
